Employ Fair Sharing – The Equalizer

Employ Fair Sharing

Every employee deserves a chance to be productive

This may sound like a basic fairness principle, but it doesn’t apply when multiple users are competing for limited bandwidth resources.  Productivity is inhibited when bandwidth hungry users run applications that oversaturate the network, leaving their co-workers bandwidth-starved and unproductive.

We recently helped a Toronto-based customer solve this common networking challenge, providing equitable dynamic bandwidth allocation across all employees. Dynamic Virtual Circuits (DVC), a feature of the TELoIP Cloud, manage traffic to and from the customer site.

Each customer site currently runs on VINO SD-Internet with and aggregated connection delivering 10 Mbps of downlink and 5 Mbps of uplink speed. The customer wanted to employ a “fair share” mechanism to distribute available bandwidth equally among the active user population. We quickly determined that TELoIP’s traffic DVCs were the perfect mechanism to accomplish this, and it’s a breeze to set up using our managed services offer!

Here’s what we did:

SD-Internet already manages the site uplink and downlink bandwidth as a Virtual Circuit, allows us to set traffic policy controls for sites, links, users and applications with granular usage reporting.

In this example, we maximize fair share amount of bandwidth for each user by dynamically adapting to the number of active users.  We set the policy to dynamically rate-limit the inbound and outbound bandwidth for each user on the customer LAN to their “fair-share” of the total 10Mbps/5Mbps Virtual pipe.   As an example, if one user on the LAN accesses the Virtual Circuit that user will have full access to the total bandwidth i.e. 10Mbps/5Mbps. However, as soon as another user of set of users begin consuming bandwidth on the LAN they will automatically get access to an equitable share the total bandwidth pipe amongst each other.

It is important to note that the TELoIP Cloud can support this functionality on a static or dynamic basis.

Employee-Fair-Sharing-Solution

Here’s how it works:

The TELoIP DVC mechanism puts you in full control of bandwidth policy, allowing you to manage traffic congestion by policing bandwidth available to each host in your network. You can allocate a minimum amount of priority bandwidth for critical applications, such as VoIP and Citrix, for every host in your network. You can also restrict the bandwidth that each host can utilize for recreational purposes, or the aggregate traffic for all applications. DVCs can also be integrated with our Unified Firewall Management system so bandwidth management can be tailored to applications or various tunnels.

The best part, it only took us 10 minutes to setup and test to ensure everything was working as expected.
